Can You Freeze an Energy Drink? [+ Fast Cooling Tips!]

It’s great to enjoy the taste of a chilled energy drink. But what if your energy drink is too warm to sip? Can you freeze it? Keep reading to find out!

Key Takeaways:

Technically speaking, you can freeze a canned energy drink, but the energy drink can will rupture and create a mess if you leave it inside the freezer for too long.

Read on as we share more interesting information about freezing and cooling your favorite energy drinks.

How Long Does It Take For An Energy Drink To Freeze?

Usually, it takes around 3 hours or more for carbonated drinks like energy drinks to freeze. However, the exact period can vary based on the energy drinks’ inside contents and the freezer’s temperature.

Typically, water freezes at 0°C (32°F) temperature. But when a solution contains other solutes like sugar, its freezing point decreases (as with energy drinks). So the exact freezing point of energy drinks will be less than 0°C (32°F).

What Will Happen To an Energy Drink In The Freezer?

Here’s what happens when an energy drink is kept inside the freezer:

  • Due to the low surrounding temperature, the liquid inside the energy drink can starts transforming from its liquid to a solid state in the first few minutes.
  • Every energy drink has carbonated water inside it. And when water freezes to ice, interestingly, its volume expands.
  • Because of the increase in the volume of the contents inside the energy drink, gas will be pushed to the walls of the can. As a result, pressure will start to build up inside the can.
  • Finally, the energy drink can will rupture, and all the contents with seep out.

Will It Explode In The Freezer?

Yes, energy drinks will explode inside the freezer because the pressure and volume of the inside can exceed the holding capacity of the energy drink can. As a result, it ruptures.

Suppose you kept an energy drink can inside the freezer and forgot to take it out. And after 24 hours, let’s say you open the energy drink. Then here are some of the things you can expect:

There’s a leak in the energy drink can, and all the contents have oozed out, forming a slushy mixture.

Or, the energy drink can have completely ruptured, causing a mess inside the freezer.

Will The Energy Drink Be Flat or Fizzy After Freezing?

If the energy drink can rupture and all the gas responsible for creating fizz in the liquid has escaped, the resulting drink will have a flat taste.

Carbon dioxide is dissolved in water to form carbonated water at high pressure. But during the freezing process, the gas will be expelled. And even if the energy drink doesn’t explode, the gas will likely come out of the liquid solution.

So when you thaw the energy drink and open the can, all the carbonation is likely to be lost and leave you with a flat drink.

If nothing like the above mentioned cases happens and the energy drink can remain in its original, intact condition, it is likely to remain fizzy.

Overall, cooling your energy drink by putting it inside the freezer is not a great idea due to the risk of rupturing.

But then, is there any way to quickly cool down a warm energy drink? Luckily, there is, and let’s learn more about it in the following section.

How To Make Your Energy Drink Get Cold Faster?

To chill a warm energy drink faster, please follow these steps:

  1. First, take an open bowl and pour a little water into it.
  2. Then cover the top layer of the bowl with ice cubes.
  3. Next, add some table salt to the bowl and mix it well with a spoon.
  4. Now, dip your energy drink inside the icy layer and let it sit there for 2 min.
  5. Finally, after 2 min, take the energy drink outside and enjoy the chilled drink.

Using this method, you can very quickly reduce the temperature of the energy drink.

How To Make Energy Drink Frozen Treats?

Although there is a risk of energy drink rupture, if you pour it into any container and try to freeze it, there are some frozen treats you can enjoy. For instance, you can make an energy drink pop or chilled slushy. Let’s see how!

How To Make an Energy Drink Popsicle :

To make an energy drink Popsicle, you need an energy drink can and a popsicle tray. Don’t have a popsicle mold tray? No problem. Click here to get one from Amazon.

Once prepared with the necessary equipment, follow these steps to make your energy drink popsicle.

  • Firstly, open the energy drink can and pour the drink into each mold of the popsicle tray.
  • Then place the special popsicle mold sticks into each mold and place the tray inside your freezer.
  • After a few hours, once the liquid energy drink freezes, take the tray out and slowly pull out each popsicle from the mold and enjoy. You may need to put the bottom of the popsicle tray under hot water to easily dislodge each popsicle.

How To Make an Energy Drink Slushy

To make an energy drink slushy, you need one can of your favorite energy drink and around 4-5 ice cubes. Once you are ready with both ingredients, follow these steps to make your delicious slushy recipe.

  • Take a freezer-friendly bowl and pour some energy drink into it. Then place this bowl in the freezer for 8-12 hours.
  • Take another energy drink can of the same brand and place it in the refrigerator just so it gets cooled.
  • Once the energy drink (that you put inside the freezer) freezes, take it out and transfer it inside a blender.
  • Also, transfer the energy drink (you previously put in the refrigerator) into the blender along with 4-5 ice cubes. Blend the mixture and pour it into a glass and enjoy your chilled energy drink slushy.
