Red Bull vs. Espresso: Which Is Better For Energy?

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s safe to say that we all need an extra boost of energy to help us get through our work or school day.

Luckily, there are beverages we can consume to perk us up and get things done. Some people choose to drink energy drinks like Red Bull, while others swear by a good old shot of Espresso.

Key Takeaways:

The main difference between Red Bull and Espresso is the list of ingredients, the form in which it comes, and its portability. If you’re seeking a convenient jolt of energy, then Red Bull is the winner. However, Espresso would be the healthier choice because it has fewer additives.

Both options have their differences, but what makes them so popular is how they can give us a kick of energy when we most need it. So which one is better for you? I’ll compare the two in the article below.

An Overview of Red Bull

Undoubtedly, Red Bull is one of the most popular brands in the world. This Austrian company has sold more than 100 billion cans of its drink since its inception in 1987, and holds 38% of the market share in the energy drinks industry.

Red Bull is usually consumed midday or late afternoon as a pick-me-up drink, providing a regenerative kick to the drinker that maintains their productivity throughout the day.

The key component in Red Bull is the Taurine and Caffeine found in its formulation. These two components provide the energy-boosting properties of Red Bull that have made it so popular as an energy drink worldwide. Other ingredients like caffeine, sugar, and B vitamins add flavor and nutrition to this well-loved drink.

Here are the ingredients found in a single can of Red Bull:

  1. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
  2. Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)
  3. Vitamin B6
  4. Vitamin B12
  5. Taurine
  6. Caffeine
  7. Sugar Beet (sweetener)
  8. Natural and Artificial colors and flavors

Pros and Cons of Red Bull

Here are the pros and cons of Red Bull:

  1. Pros
  2. It contains up to 1000mg of Taurine that stimulates energy, but does not cause side effects like restlessness like caffeine does.
  3. With its worldwide popularity, you know that this is a trusted brand with years of R&D behind it
  1. Cons
  2. It has a high sugar content – 27g per serving, almost the recommended daily sugar intake (36g) for adults.
  3. Red Bull contains 80g of caffeine, which is considerably high

An Overview of Espresso

If you’ve ever bought a coffee from a cafe or a coffee shop, you probably already know what an espresso is. It is the base of most, if not all, coffee drinks such as latte, cappuccino, flat whites, and americanos.

It is a thicker, highly concentrated version of coffee that is served in a shot glass rather than in a regular mug. Espresso is made by forcing pressurized hot water through ground (finely ground) coffee beans using an espresso machine.

This process results in a liquid coffee with its flavors amplified – bitter, sweet, acidic, and roasty – that fits into a shot glass. In short, Espresso is made from the same beans as regular coffee, just made differently, making it stronger and thicker.

Here are the ingredients that makeup Espresso

  1. Finely ground 100% coffee
  2. Hot water

As you can see, Espresso is an all-natural drink that is made from 100% coffee and water.

Pros and Cons of Espresso

  1. Pros
  2. Espresso is all-natural and contains no artificial ingredients
  3. The effects of Espresso last much longer than Red Bull – Espresso can keep you alert for up to 5 hours while Red Bull lasts up to 2 or 3 hours
  1. Cons
  2. You can’t really make Espresso at home or anywhere unless you have a big coffee machine that can make it
  3. You also need coffee beans, and a way to grind those coffee beans to make the best shot of Espresso possible.

Caffeine Content or Red Bull and Espresso

Generally, Espresso has more caffeine than Red Bull does. The high concentration of Espresso means that it contains about 77mg of caffeine in a single shot. This converts to 1.5 fluid ounces. In comparison, Red Bull contains 14.2mg of caffeine in 1.5 fluid ounces, which is considerably less than Espresso.

Red Bull or Espresso – which one is better for me?

Espresso does not contain any artificial ingredients that Red Bull has, and it does not contain any sugar (unless you add it yourself). This means that Espresso is healthier than Red Bull by all accounts.

Espresso also contains health benefits that support long-term memory, protection against diseases such as diabetes, heart issues, and Alzheimer’s, and reduces stroke risk.

However, Red Bull is pretty easy to find anywhere. In fact, if you go to a gas station or a local store near you, there’s a high chance you’ll be able to buy a can of Red Bull as soon as you open the fridge door. This convenience makes Red Bull a popular choice for a quick pick-me-up drink as compared to Espresso, in which you have to make it with a coffee machine or wait in line in a coffee shop for a barista to make it for you.

When it comes to taste however, Red Bull certainly wins over Espresso. Though it has a high sugar content, it is much more palatable than Espresso, which is bitter, thick, and acidic which is generally going to be an acquired taste for most people.

Conclusion

Both Red Bull and Espresso contain enough caffeine to provide an instant energy boost, especially if we need a perk-up in the middle of a long day.

However, in terms of health, it is safe to say that drinking a shot of Espresso daily is much healthier than drinking one or multiple cans of Red Bull to get you through your day.

Additionally, you can choose to mix up your Espresso and turn it into other coffee drinks such as Latte, Cappuccino, Flat white, or Americano, to name a few – so that you can add more variety into your daily ritual!
